GUERNSEY'S ability to keep consistently punching well above its weight will make it even more of an honour to be named the new Guernsey Press Ambassador of the Year, three-times world touring car champion Andy Priaulx believes.

The racing ace, who also founded the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation with wife Jo, is a double-winner of the award, which he labelled 'a huge accolade from the people of Guernsey'.

'To be recognised for something that is not necessarily specific to sports is a great honour,' he said.

'It meant a lot and was really nice to be honoured by the public.

'We are proud of our island, proud of our heritage and proud to be Guernsey people and to be recognised by the public. It was a great moment of my career.'

The ambassador award has been won by people from a range of backgrounds over its 27 years, including sport, business and arts.

Various other past winners have also spoken of their delight at receiving the tribute.

Mr Priaulx said it was the way so many islanders excelled on the worldwide stage that made it even more of an honour to be mentioned in the same breath.

'It is not just with an island-wide audience either.

'We have had a lot of success in every area and Guernsey punches above its weight on a worldwide scale.'

The racing champ counts being made an MBE in 2008 among his other honours. Meanwhile, another proud achievement, the setting up of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation 10 years ago with Jo, celebrated its milestone anniversary earlier this month.

The Guernsey Press Ambassador of the Year award criteria states it aims to celebrate those individuals or groups who have gone that extra mile to promote Guernsey's name beyond its shores, and/or brought credit and recognition to the islands. Last year's winner was Olympian Carl Hester.

The 2013 title will be presented in February at the island's Awards for Achievement gala night.
