GUERNSEY needs an independent, government-funded agency to promote an integrated digital strategy.

C5 Alliance Group managing director Marc Laine said the island was in danger of becoming a backwater because of the lack of an integrated strategy that would keep Guernsey competitive with the rest of the world.

‘We should have a fully independent agency to promote Digital Guernsey. I strongly believe that we need a government-funded body with a paid executive and non-execs whose vision is to drive a digital strategy for the island. There is an outward-facing role and a huge inward-facing role,’ he said.

‘We haven’t got a choice. If we are going to have social and economic success as a community we have to embrace the digital world or we are in danger of becoming an idiocracy [a regressive society]. We have to do it because everyone else is doing it and the stakes are higher than we realise. The survival of existing businesses depends on it.’

Mr Taylor added: ‘I give Marc’s idea of Digital Guernsey my full support. There is nothing that exists like that at the moment and indeed, perhaps the question is not “should the island have an independent body plotting the island’s digital direction?” but “why don’t we have one already?”.’

"I can't get those politicians to grasp this digital strategy!"

"Have you tried switching them off and on again?"

Doesnt seem to be working for Jersey why would we be any different?

And I suppose Marc just happens to think he is the right person for this public tax payer paid position

Devil's Advocate

Sounds like Mr. Lainé is simply copying the finance industry and saying to the States 'please give us money so we can safeguard jobs for your islanders, we can't possibly keep making vast profits otherwise'. What does he expect the proposed 'Digital Guernsey' body to actually do?

It is getting truly pathetic this money grabbing, its like a flipping illness.

Alex Taylor is a prime candidate for a 'holding things' page on Facebook.....

But what will Kevin Stewart hold ?

Caption of Mr Laine reminds me of some of the deputies at important states debates dozing off.

Finance industry after another freebie at every taxpayer's expense(again!)

And the private sector are moaning about propping up the public sector pension scheme.

Hypocrites.

At least the public sector pay something towards their pensions.
