Bristol is one city to benefit from inward investment from abroad.

United States companies have been the biggest inward investors into the UK this year, with strong interest in several regions outside London, according to a new report.

Preston, Leeds and Bristol were the most popular cities outside the capital for attracting overseas firms, said information services company Experian.

The number of overseas organisations investing in the UK fell from 451 to 407 in the first nine months of the year compared to the same time in 2012, although there was a big increase in the latest quarter, said the report.

US firms were involved in 152 deals, followed by France (28) and Germany (27), with most coming from the manufacturing sector.

Max Firth of Experian, said: "The fact that British firms are increasingly attracting investment from foreign investors reveals the quality of businesses in this country. It's also encouraging to see the manufacturing sector being a focus for so much of this attention after a tough few years."
