AN AUSTRALIAN living in Guernsey is hopeful her family has come unscathed through Queensland's most dangerous cyclone.

Samantha Edwards, 38 (pictured), said she had been on tenterhooks waiting to hear from her sister, Joanne Pring, 39, who had been told to evacuate her home in Townsville - a town on the destruction path of the category five storm, Cyclone Yasi.

After sending two text messages with no reply, Mrs Edwards began to worry about how her sister, her partner, and nine-year-old son Lachlan would cope when the predicted 185mph winds hit.

But when her sister finally answered her mobile, Mrs Edwards was relieved to hear the family had made it to an evacuation centre.
