Penelope Cruz has revealed that singing helps her to unwind.

The Oscar-winning Spanish actress admitted picking up the microphone and belting out a song, especially rap tracks, makes her relax.

"I love singing karaoke. When I hear people say that they don't like it, I just think they are lying," she told Red.

"I do it to have a laugh - and to laugh at myself, when I need to. My favourites are Blondie and I also love to rap: Biggie (Smalls) and Eminem."

Penelope, who has two children with actor husband Javier Bardem, said being a mother has made her change.

"Now, of course, I only dance to children's songs with the kids at home. In my 20s, I used to go everywhere in high heels and make-up. But there is no way that I would do that now; I need to be barefoot most of the time so that I can run after the kids," she said.

The 39-year-old also said how she "stalked" Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar so she could appear in his films, after his film Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, starring Antonio Banderas, inspired her to act. Her attempts paid off when he chose her to star in Jamon Jamon.

"From that moment I became obsessed with the idea of working with Pedro. He was my reason, my inspiration. I didn't know anyone in the business. It was like I had decided to go to the moon," she recalled.

"I used to go to Pedro's house and wait for him to come out on the balcony to water his plants. He didn't know he had this crazy person following him around."
