Berry cooks up food pioneer award

Great British Bake-Off judge Mary Berry has won an award at a ceremony celebrating the achievements of women.

Baking star Berry, 78, was presented with the Rose Gray Food Pioneer Award for her culinary skills and her career in broadcasting.

Other stars honoured at Red's Hot Women Awards 2013 include Birmingham-born singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, 27, for her debut album Sing To The Moon.

Mvula said: "It's imperative to celebrate the achievements of women. So far, I have relied entirely on the examples of other women, from my mum to key women in the public eye. I think that it is just so important that we celebrate it, and celebrate it publicly."

The fashion award was won by Alice Temperley, the blogger category by 25-year-old Jack Monroe for A Girl Named Jack, a blog she created to document life on the breadline, and the media trophy to Sophie Turner Laing, a managing director for BSkyB.

Women in science, digital media and business were also honoured at the London ceremony, with guests expected to include Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry and Vicky Pryce, the economist who was jailed for swapping speeding points with ex-husband Chris Huhne .

Judges included BBC Breakfast presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star Susanna Reid and novelist and former MP Louise Mensch.

Red magazine editor-in-chief Sarah Bailey said: ''We are delighted to be celebrating the achievements of some of Britain's most powerful, talented and dynamic women.

"It is so important, in today's challenging working world, to acknowledge the incredible skills of our country's female talent."
