Judi Dench is set to be interviewed by her real-life MI5 counterpart, Baroness Manningham-Buller, later this month when she takes over the Today programme for a day.

The ex-intelligence chief, who became director general of MI5 in 2002 before retiring in 2007, is one of five guest editors on the flagship Radio 4 show this month.

She will interview Dame Judi, who played M in seven James Bond films, about the role and how spies are portrayed in cinema.

The other guest editors are Monty Python star Michael Palin, creator of the worldwide web Tim Berners-Lee, musician PJ Harvey and Barclays Bank boss Antony Jenkins.

Dame Judi's replacement as M, Ralph Fiennes, will appear as a guest on PJ's show reading poetry chosen by her.

During his show, Michael will join up with nightclub boss Peter Stringfellow to return to their native Sheffield.

Their programmes will be broadcast on the Radio 4 morning show between December 26 and 31.
