GUERNSEY under-19s produced a masterful performance over Wokingham in South Region Division Two at Beau Sejour yesterday. 'I'm very pleased, they played very well,' said Guernsey coach Denise Bourgaize.

'They knew they had to play because we've got a strong bench. I think from goal shooter to goalkeeper the whole team gave a 100% effort for the crowd to watch and it was a good crowd, which is brilliant.

'I want to thank our supporters. They really helped.'

Against a team that they beat in the opening game of the season, the Sarnians started strongly as their goal shooter, Kiara De Carteret, found her range straight from the off.

De Carteret was on fire all game and she ended up with 25 points. She also linked very well with captain Zola Bourgaize at goal attack and centre Lyndsey Bougourd.

However, they were guilty of some sloppy bounce passes around Wokingham's post in the opening stanza that resulted in the greens only leading 11-7 by the end of the quarter.

The Berkshire side stepped their defence up a gear in the second quarter with the spiky Emily Plank at wing attack and goal shooter and captain Christa Best doing well at the other end of the court.

But Guernsey gradually got into their rhythm again and by sharpening up their passes, took a 17-11 lead into half-time.

Coach Bourgaize decided to mix things up by bringing on Donna Brehaut at wing attack for Lisa Martin who look shattered after working so hard.

And with Guernsey goalkeeper Gemma Loveridge and Amy Wright, who was having a stormer at goal defence, Wokingham found goals hard to come by.

Taking a 31-14 advantage into the last quarter, Laura Callaway came on at goal shooter while De Carteret moved to goal attack as the versatile Bourgaize went back to goalkeeper as Loveridge came off.

Callaway was initially tentative with her shots but as her confidence grew she soon found the ring to help see the greens eventually win by 17.

'I think we're still on the plane,' said Wokingham coach Pat Harper.

'The girls said their legs felt like lead. We played well in places, but they just hadn't got it all together.

'We actually gave the game away. Guernsey didn't have to work too hard for that.'
