ENERGY costs will have to rise if the island is serious about tackling climate change, according to Guernsey Electricity managing director Ian Watson (pictured).

He said the Energy Policy Steering Group had rightly identified the need to tackle other sources of carbon emissions and not just power production. And it will mean a combination of measures is required if the island is to be successful.

'We've already come a long way since the island was entirely reliant on oil for all its electricity needs,' said Mr Watson. 'However, if we want to reduce the island's carbon emissions, we also have to seriously address other sources and not just electricity generation.

'Ultimately, whatever measures we adopt, it is likely to mean that energy costs rise. That is a bitter pill, but if the island is serious about tackling climate change, it is a price that we are all going to have to pay.'
