Petrol: only the Swiss pay less, says PO survey

GUERNSEY petrol is still cheap, despite recent price rises. According to the annual Post Office Motoring on the Continent survey, Switzerland is the cheapest, with unleaded at 92p per litre.

Although Spain was ranked second, at 100p per litre, local petrol is cheaper at around 96.7ppl. 'That's a surprise. The price of petrol has gone up greatly recently,' said Braye Road Garage director Mark Finn, 36 (pictured).

'Tourists always comment that it is cheap, but Guernsey is an expensive place to live and it doesn't feel cheap,' he said.

The survey provides information on pump prices for both unleaded and diesel in 12 European countries and shows that prices vary dramatically inside the euro-zone. The Channel Islands were not listed.

The cost of local diesel is 107.5p per litre, which is beaten in the survey by Spain at 94p, Austria at 101p and Switzerland at 102p. In both cases Guernsey is cheaper than the UK, which places seventh for unleaded at 116p and eleventh for diesel at 129p.
