STUDENTS have stepped into the campaign for a safe walking and cycling route to the new secondary schools in St Sampson's.
Living Streets is continuing to promote the use of green lanes from the Pitronnerie Road industrial estate to the back of St Sampson's High and Le Murier. A walk along the route on Saturday attracted students, teachers, parents, neighbours and deputies.
A meeting about progressing the idea, which could involve buying or leasing a vinery site at the back of the prison, will be held later this week between the Education, Home and Environment departments.
'The school council is passionate about the option to walk. We have a lot of children who live in that area,' said St Peter Port head teacher Ken Wheeler. 'Some of them will be closer to this school than they were to St Peter Port and they walk and cycle now.'
The council has written to Education minister Carol Steere stating its support. Mr Wheeler played down any concerns about the safety of the lanes.
