A WIN is a win and it is exactly what Guernsey needed.

They were far from faultless on Saturday at Foote's Lane and you could sense the disappointment in captain Simon Sharrott at the fact that his side could not produce the 80-minute performance that could be so crucial against other opposition.

But, importantly, at times they showed just what they are capable of and for 50 minutes there was only one side in it.

Winchester produced nothing of note as an attacking force during the first half and in the early exchanges of the second while the hosts came up with four contrasting but well worked tries.

A decent crowd were spurred into life early on as local favourite Layton Batiste came up with a barnstorming run down the narrow blind side after five minutes and you could feel the excitement rise.
