THE Baubigny schools stand a good chance of scooping a national award for their facilities next week, according to the schools' head teachers.

Le Murier and St Sampson's High School were put forward for this year's Times Educational Supplement Schools' awards.

Combined, they formed one of the six schools shortlisted in the outstanding new or refurbished secondary school category.

Head teacher of St Sampson's High, Hazel Tetlaw, said she was really proud the school had been recognised.

'It's a real accolade for Guernsey,' she said. 'We are one of the smallest local authorities in Great Britain, and therefore for Guernsey to be chosen is a great achievement.

'It reminds us how lucky we are here, and how the island has invested in its future.'

Head teacher of Le Murier school, Alan Brown, believed it was the unusual way in which the secondary and special schools had been linked that had caught the judges' eyes.

'It is very rare to have two schools like ours under one roof,' he said.

'The schools were designed to work closely together, and it makes a very important statement.'
