MORE than 3,000 people have signed a petition urging the States to say no to Public Services' £93.5m. waste plant.

Chartered accountant Sarah Evans, representing the Say No Campaign, yesterday handed the document to Deputy Dave Jones to take to the States.

But Public Services minister Bernard Flouquet has accused such groups of running a successful but highly negative campaign not supported by the majority of islanders.

The petition came a day after a protest march against the proposed incinerator at Longue Hougue. Attendance estimates varied from 300 to 500.

Deputies will vote this week on whether the Suez Environnement plant gets the go-ahead.

Mrs Evans said everyone from teenagers to pensioners had signed the petition over a 10-day period.

'I'm hoping we will get a good response from deputies. If they don't listen to us, then they are not doing their job,' she said.

Deputy Jones will take a sursis to the States this week asking members to evaluate Public Services' preferred option and other waste alternatives.
