Karl Miller admitted that he, together with unknown others, caused almost £7,000-worth of damage to the church in January 2006.

The 22-year-old was granted unconditional bail and a probation report was ordered.

The court heard that deep scratches were made in the church door and the words, 'God, if U exist, kill yourself', were written in black marker pen. A large pagan pentagram was drawn on the carpet and candles placed at each point.

A large Mothers' Union banner was set on fire and fell to the ground, causing further damage to the carpet. Crosses around the church were turned upside down and the organ had to be checked for smoke damage.

Miller was traced when DNA taken from beer cans and cigarette ends found at the church matched a sample he gave when he was arrested last year in connection with another matter.

Miller, of room 7, 15, George Street, St Peter Port, is due in court for sentencing on 4 March.
