ALDERNEY'S tidal energy developer has secured a deal to supply power to the UK.

Alderney Renewable Energy last month acquired the right to export 2,000MW of electricity to the UK National Grid.

The company, which claims to have spent £5.5m. on its business activities since November 2008, has already agreed to export 285MW to the French grid.

Writing in a newsletter, a spokesman for ARE said: 'When tidal power is developed in Alderney there will be far too much electricity for the island's needs and it will be necessary to export it to market.

'This is a complex and expensive part of our work. As you may already know, ARE acquired 285MW capacity into the French grid in November 2008 and it has since acquired capacity into the UK grid of 2,000MW.'
