GUERNSEY police moved to reassure islanders after armed officers were spotted near the Vale Church and in the Fauxquets Valley yesterday.

Firearms officers have been taking part in training exercises and more will be carried out until Thursday and from Monday until Thursday next week. The exercises will be conducted all over the island but none of the guns are loaded.

Inspector JP Le Breton (pictured) said that officers did put up signs and spoke to neighbours to warn them about exercises and those conducting the training also wear 'instructor' jackets.

However one islander who saw armed police in Fauxquets Valley yesterday said they should do more to warn the public. Debbie Troth was driving in the valley yesterday when she was overtaken by three police cars and saw officers with guns.

She was told afterwards it was a training exercise but said the experience had left her shaking like a leaf.
