Occupation research is 'an ethical duty' says Cambridge academic

A CAMBRIDGE academic has defended her research on the Occupation and said she will not receive a penny in royalties when her book is published.

Dr Gilly Carr was responding to criticism on the Guernsey Press's sister website www.thisis guernsey.com from contributors who questioned the need for more research into the era and whether it was partly motivated by the prospect of royalties.

Dr Carr (pictured) said her work, focusing on resistance during the Occupation, is not motivated by money. 'It will also be an academic book and these do not pay the authors to write them so there will be no royalties.'

Dr Carr said it was important to have a proper examination of resistance in Guernsey. 'The testimonies are horrific. Many didn't return and as a consequence of all this, families were destroyed.'
