A SKATEPARK would help get youngsters off island streets and help create a future extreme sports champion.

That was the message from Guernsey's Xtreme Sports Association, which, after 30 long years of lobbying, hopes to see a permanent facility for local skateboarders and BMX riders built at Beau Sejour by next summer.

With costs expected to top £200,000, fund-raising is key, which is why today the Guernsey Press, as media partner, is helping launch its Get On Board campaign.

Since planning permission for the facility was approved in November, the association has been looking at ways to attract donations and sponsorship so that the work could begin.
