Regional officer Bob Lanning (pictured), who has taken over from Ron Le Cras, said that although legislation could 'tie' people's hands in the UK, crucial pieces were missing in Guernsey.

'You have the right to a redundancy process, but no money at the end of it.'

And there was nothing to stop a company sacking its staff on the basis that in a worst-case scenario, it would have to pay six months' salary after an employment tribunal.

In the UK, he said, companies could not dismiss people just because they had the power to do so.
