NEARLY half a million pounds was spent last year recruiting and relocating teachers and lecturers, the Education Department has revealed.

Recruiting each teacher from off-island could cost £24,000.

And with the Housing Department confirming there are 163 teachers on licences of various lengths handed out during the last 15 years, the total relocation cost probably runs into the millions.

The figures were released after claims made by teacher John Carr (pictured), who is fighting to stay in the island after his licence ran out. He criticised the cost to the States for its perpetual recruitment of staff.

An Education spokesman said it was just one of the States departments which offered the relocation packages.
