RECEIVING planning approval for the loss of 200 North Beach parking spaces has paved the way for work to replace the island's ageing harbour cranes, Public Services has said.

But the project, which will replace four cranes on berths four and five with two mobile ones, must still be given the final go-ahead by States members at this month's meeting.

Harbour master Captain Peter Gill said the scheme had passed its first hurdle after it was backed by Environment's political board at an open planning meeting this week.

Deputies voted unanimously in support, although some criticised the project's lack of consultation with harbour users.
