ISLANDERS will receive their UK mail later under a plan about to be finalised by Guernsey Post.

The States-owned utility has been in talks with Guernsey Airport to scrap the £90,000-a-year charge it currently pays for the airport to open early.

At the moment the mail plane lands when it opens at 6am and the newspapers follow at 6.15am. The first passenger flights depart at 7am.

But the airport looks set to open at the later time of 6.30am in future.

Guernsey Post chief executive Boley Smillie said a start date had not been confirmed but many discussions had taken place.
