First day sees 37 nominations and two sure contests already

NOMINATIONS for next month's general election opened yesterday and, with 37 candidates so far, elections are already guaranteed in two of the seven districts.

NOMINATIONS for next month's general election opened yesterday and, with 37 candidates so far, elections are already guaranteed in two of the seven districts.

As doors opened at 9am, 16 people were waiting to hand in their forms – one of the longest queues of candidates in memory.

First in line was Deputy Allister Langlois, who is again standing in St Peter Port South, and who arrived at 7.40am.

New candidate Heidi Soulsby, who set up the Mundi Group in 2006, is standing in the South-East.

Former deputy Tony Webber will be standing in the Vale.

Gavin St Pier, who runs a trust company, is contesting St Sampson's.

Advocate Chris Green is another new candidate – he will stand in the Castel.
