VALE Douzaine has defended its decision to hold this year's hustings in the douzaine room again, despite more than 100 people being forced to stand, watch and listen to last time's election candidates from outside.

Junior constable Colin Bond said parish officials had looked for another location straight after the 2008 hustings, but the search had been unsuccessful.

More than 300 turned up for the meeting at the last election, spilling out into the car park from a number of exits and listening to parishioners grilling would-be deputies on loudspeakers.

Mr Bond, the 2008 hustings chairman, said at the time that a new venue would be needed – he suggested the school hall.

But yesterday he said parishioners would once again have to cram into the douzaine room as there were no suitable alternatives within the parish.
