DEMOLITION of a German structure in St Saviour's is historic vandalism, a local preservation society has said.

A retrospective planning application has been lodged and follows a challenge notice by the Environment Department for the site near Rue de L'Arquet.

It forms part of the Mirus Battery, which is sited on a large area of high ground above L'Eree where the largest guns in the Channel Islands were placed.

The battery is made up of bunkers, gun emplacements and other structures.

Festung Guernsey project co-ordinator Paul Bourgaize said he was not sure exactly what the structure near Rue de L'Arquet was, but it might have been an access road and a small covered tunnel.
