A GUERNSEYMAN has recalled how his grandfather could have gone down with the Titanic if he had not lost a fight for a ticket with his cousin.

Yesterday saw the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the vessel on its ill-fated voyage to America after it hit an iceberg just before midnight on 14 April 1912.

Tony Hobbs, 75, said his grandfather Clary Young, who had been in his twenties at the time, could have been one of the 1,500 who lost their lives if not for a dispute with his cousin.

A plaque unveiled yesterday commemorates the Guernsey people who lost their lives on the vessel.
