INDEPENDENT living, health and wellbeing, access to opportunities and protection against discrimination are key areas that are currently being considered as part of the development of a disability and inclusion strategy.

Disability and equalities officer Emilie Yerby launched the first stage of the strategy at last night's Guernsey Disability Alliance annual meeting.

In a presentation, she outlined the progress being made as well as highlighting the priorities of the strategy.

She said all the priorities needed to be achieved in a way that was appropriate for the island, that they met disabled people's needs and that they respected the financial constraints of the island.

As part of the strategy, an island-wide survey will be conducted to identify the types of disability and degrees of disadvantage that islanders faced.
