EIGHT local beaches have achieved a 'gold' standard for water quality under the European Union guidelines this year - one more than in 2011.

There was success for Cobo, after failing the test for the last four years.

However, Petit Bot and Pembroke just met the legal minimum standard.

The Channel Islands had the greatest proportion of beaches that met the gold standard for excellence in water quality in the Marine Conservation Society survey for its annual Good Beach Guide.

It had 23 out of 29 beaches reaching the standard - a record in the 25-year history of the British guide.
