MORE than 2,300 guns are privately owned in Guernsey, police have confirmed.

The figure was released after it emerged that there were nearly 10,000 privately-owned guns in Jersey - which put gun ownership in the island at three times the rate of the UK.

There are, on average, 3,287 guns for every 100,000 people in the UK.

A Guernsey Police spokesman said there were 2,336 privately-owned guns (firearms and shotguns) in the island, slightly higher than the UK average.

The police spokesman said the force was not concerned by the figure.
