A GUERNSEY STEVEDORES' employee feared he was going to be crushed after a crane lifted a container too high and began lowering it above his head, the Royal Court heard yesterday.

The man tried to flee but could not remove his right hand in time, resulting in it being crushed and him losing a finger.

The States of Guernsey was fined £10,000 for failing to ensure that persons not in its employment were not exposed to risks to their health and safety.

Guernsey Stevedores Ltd was fined £3,500 for failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work for its employees and both defendants admitted the health and safety breaches.
