GUERNSEY Housing Association has applied for permission to build 14 sheltered housing flats at the former South Legion Hall site at Route des Coutures, St Martin's.

According to the Rural Area Plan it can be developed only for social or sheltered housing because it is considered to 'round off' the adjacent Housing Department estate. GHA will purchase the land from J. W. Rihoy, who will build the properties.

GHA chief executive Steve Williams said: 'We will be providing 14 much-needed flats for older people who are unable to carry on living in their own homes, and the support they require will be provided by Housing Department staff from the new extra care housing development to be built nearby at Longue Rue.'

The site has been derelict for years and the project had been designed by architects Lovell Ozanne and Partners, he said.
