A PLANNED maze at Oatlands has been refused permission after two sections of the Commerce and Employment Department gave conflicting recommendations about whether the scheme should go ahead.

The tourism section gave its full backing to the project, but the department's agriculture and environment adviser opposed the plans.

The visitor attraction had applied to build a hedging maze.

A spokesman for tourism said access to the site was excellent and the new feature would attract more vacationers.

But an agriculture and environment adviser said the land was an area of high landscape quality and the Oatlands owner should change it back to agriculture.
