AUTHORISATION for the use of Tasers in Guernsey has leapt within the last five years, latest figures reveal.

Guernsey Police began using the non-lethal form of subduing individuals in 2006 and between then and March 2012 Tasers have been issued 104 times.

Figures indicate a significant rise in the number of authorisations and deployment of the device – 41 times in 2011 compared to a range of between five and 17 occasions in the previous five years.

The information was released in a Jersey Scrutiny Committee report review of the intended introduction of Tasers for the police there.
