A MAN has been arrested in the UK after the States was conned out of £2.6m. of taxpayers' money.

Treasury and Resources was duped into paying the money to a third party after receiving a letter, which the department believed to be from airport contractor Lagan, telling it that the construction firm had changed its bank details.

Treasury and Resources minister Gavin St Pier, who insisted there would be no cover up, revealed a police investigation began almost immediately after the department was made aware by Lagan on 10 July that its expected payment had not arrived.

The States internal audit team, which has in the past been criticised for a lack of staff, also began an investigation, while the terms of reference for an external independent investigation are to be agreed shortly by Chief Minister Peter Harwood.
