TREASURY minister Gavin St Pier has pledged that whoever is responsible for the £2.6m. con will be held accountable – whatever position they hold.

'Why would we seek to protect those who need to be held to account?' said Deputy St Pier (pictured) yesterday.

At this stage, however, he did not know where the blame lay. 'We do have to get more facts and then decide where the accountability lies. Is it at junior level or elsewhere? Even if it's elsewhere, it does need to be addressed.'

Deputy St Pier said as minister he accepted responsibility for what happened in his department. 'That doesn't mean I resign at the first instant. It's my duty to get to the bottom of what happened. We should be judged on how we react to this.'
