CONTROVERSIAL plans to develop the Oatlands glasshouse sites tick all the boxes from a heritage point of view, the Culture and Leisure minister has said.

Deputy Mike O'Hara has defended why his department has backed proposals to turn Les Gigands and Oatlands vineries into a museum and equestrian centre.

'The island has to take a long- term view on this,' he said yesterday.

'You have to think about the economy - I believe this will benefit tourism - you have to think about the sporting aspect, it's something that is going to attract visitors as well as local people.

'I think it ticks all the boxes from a culture and leisure, heritage and sport and tourism point of view.'
