ST SAMPSON'S harbour will be closed to all shipping for a day this month so a new generator for the power station can be delivered.

Harbour master Captain Peter Gill said a ship resembling a large landing craft was due to arrive in Guernsey on 28 August.

The following day, three loads will be pulled off it - one weighing more than 300 tonnes - and driven along North Quay to their new home at Guernsey Electricity.

'I think it will be the sort of thing that everybody and his brother will want to watch,' said Captain Gill.

'I don't think that anything so big has ever been taken along a Guernsey road before.'
