PETROL prices have almost doubled in Guernsey in the last five years, according to the latest States figures.

Statistics released by the Policy Council show that the average fuel price was just 64p per litre for unleaded in September 2007, compared to 114p in June this year.

Now with petrol prices even higher – in some cases above 120p a litre – garage owners have blamed the higher costs on duty rises and the scrapping of annual motor tax – the charge was added on to the cost of fuel in January 2008.

Le Mont Saint Garage owner Dave Beausire said the duty paid five years ago was minuscule compared to now.
