CALLS have been made to help disabled islanders play a more active role in sports as a lasting Paralympics legacy.

People of all ages and abilities have been left inspired by the sports spectacular that lit up London this summer and now hope it could prove a catalyst for greater opportunities on the island for the disabled.

Marathon wheelchair racer Aindre Reece-Sheerin, 56, of St Sampson's hailed the inspirational Paralympic athletes and encouraged all people with disabilities to get involved in sport and achieve their personal goals.

Guernsey Disability Alliance vice-chairman Jenny Hooper hoped the Games could have a lasting legacy in Guernsey.

States disability champion Deputy John Gollop said that a 'new generation of stars had emerged' from the Paralympics and believed more would be done to support people with disabilities.
