GATWICK cannot use a second runway as an excuse to further increase landing fees, Flybe has said.

The UK airport yesterday announced its intent to push for a second runway, saying it was to start drawing up detailed plans for government approval.

It said it would be 'affordable and practical' and would allow it to compete with its London rival, Heathrow.

Speaking after the announcement yesterday, Flybe, which flies to the airport from here, said: 'Guernsey needs better connectivity and therefore increased capacity in the south-east of England is important but if it is to happen, Gatwick cannot use it as an excuse to further hike up landing fees.'

An agreement is currently in place that any new runway at Gatwick cannot be opened before 2019. However, the airport is looking to get the go ahead after the next election.
