PEOPLE living peacefully near a soon-to-be-closed country hotel have demanded that the site remains sympathetic to its surroundings once redeveloped.

Residents were particularly opposed to any suggestion that Green Acres Hotel could be converted into a major housing development.

Homeowners were yesterday reacting to the news that the 43-bedroom St Martin's establishment was to shut its doors after more than 40 years of serving Guernsey.

Neighbours of the hotel, which is set to close on 31 October, fear a major housing project or even a supermarket could bring with it traffic chaos and overdevelop a relatively quiet and rural section of the island.
