'RECKLESS vandals' who have condemned a 90-year-old oak tree to die in a couple of years might have done it to give themselves a better view, the owner has said.

Police are investigating the incident in Havelet, St Peter Port, after it was reported by property owner Stephen Black, 66.

The resident of 13 years was saddened that last week someone had secretly spent time 'ring-barking' the 65ft tree – sawing a ring around the bottom of the trunk to prevent sap from reaching the top and leaving it open to infection.

'It was a mature tree when we moved into the house and I'm very fond of it,' he said.

'The only reason I can think of for someone to have done this would have been to give themselves a better view – it's criminal damage really.
