Islanders see how the former 'Ritz' is shaping up

A CONSTANT stream of curious islanders took the opportunity to investigate how their former pub, 'the Ritz', had changed into a block of flats, at an open day of the former St Saviour's Tavern.

A CONSTANT stream of curious islanders took the opportunity to investigate how their former pub, 'the Ritz', had changed into a block of flats, at an open day of the former St Saviour's Tavern.

Development of the site at Cour de Frie Baton, had come up against passionate protest from former regulars, unwilling to lose their parish pub.

Martel Maides director Nick Renny said in just 30 minutes, roughly 100 islanders had walked through the door.

'It's been a complete zoo,' he said.

'A lot of people are people who used to enjoy drinking here so they've come out of curiosity. But a lot of people have been impressed with the flats and several have taken plans and details and asked to come back for a more private viewing.'

I wonder how many of the people that live near the "Old Ritz" are still missing it?.... The drunks at chuck out time, the shouting and swearing, the smell of deep fried food wafting through the air , the puking into gardens: especially at Christmas time!....I wonder?

Obviously you never went there Mark. The Ritz was not a town bar full of who knows who, it was a real local and many miss it.

the Ritz was a good pub, shame it was closed down, i live by the pub and used it I never saw any thing bad, they all go to Perelle bay and drink, proper gents

Yes, it was a nice, 'proper' pub.

Not sure I like Renny's comment, 'it was a zoo'; when you hold an open day MM, be pleased that us folks turned up, you should know that us Guerns are a naturally inquisitive race, and some have fond mems of a pleasant place to have a pint.
