AN AMENDMENT to defeat Treasury and Resources' controversial suggestion to phase out mortgage interest tax relief will go before the States, Deputy Matt Fallaize has confirmed.

The Vale politician, pictured, will challenge the department's 2013 Budget when it is debated at the next month's States meeting.

Many islanders have reacted angrily to Treasury's plans and have signed up to Facebook groups and an online petition to make their worries known.

Some deputies have also raised concerns about the effect on homeowners of phasing out the tax relief.

But Treasury members insisted over the weekend that firm proposals to phase out the relief would be brought to the States only after a review of taxes.
