PUBLIC Services has launched an initiative to encourage islanders to reduce rubbish produced at lunchtime.

The department has organised today's waste-free lunch concept and has signed up local companies to promote it to staff.

The challenge will be to prepare the meal so that little food and packaging waste is left.

Waste prevention and recycling officer Emma Simpson said the initiative would highlight how a few simple changes could make a difference.

'With just a bit of thought and planning, it's easy to cut down on lunchbox waste,' she said. 'Just going through that thought process is a good way to get people thinking more generally about what they buy and what waste they produce. '
