AN HSSD board member denied yesterday that sick people were being used as playing counters in a game of brinkmanship between his department and Treasury and Resources.

Elis Bebb said at no time had anybody considered it was an opportunity for one board to get one over another.

He was responding on the BBC Guernsey phone-in to a suggestion that cuts to the health service were 'as much a political spat as they were an economic issue'.

Deputy Bebb, pictured, said he found that suggestion offensive.

The department had decided to act after realising that its forecast budget deficit had risen from £1.5m. to £2.5m. Letting that carry on was not an option, he said.
