EXTREME sports fans celebrated yesterday as work officially started on Guernsey's long-awaited skatepark.

Lt-Governor Air Marshal Peter Walker climbed aboard a digger during a sod-cutting ceremony to mark the milestone at Beau Sejour in front of specially invited guests.

It is now down to UK-based Wold Construction to transform the area near the leisure centre by Easter.

The event marked yet another milestone in the Get on Board campaign, launched by the Guernsey Xtreme Sports Association and supported by the Guernsey Press, which raised more than £250,000 in two years for the purpose-built facility.
