GUERNSEY’S new skatepark is starting to take shape as contractors press ahead with the much-anticipated project.

UK-based Wold Construction remain on track with its plans to transform the area near Beau Sejour by Easter and have made plenty of progress in their initial three weeks of work.

Already the diggers have been clearing land. Workers have also installed drainage and laid concrete bases for the main bowl and the street section.

The project was made possible thanks to the Get On Board campaign, launched by the Guernsey Xtreme Sports Association and supported by the Guernsey Press, which raised more than £250,000 in two years.

Association chairman Deputy Mike O’Hara encouraged extreme sports enthusiasts and members of the public to head to the site to see progress being made.

Look out Mike, you may get hit by a football! ;-)

Jeepers!

That looks a bit close to the football pitch

Is it safe?

Alex Cross

And as always, a massive thank you to all the sponsors who have made this a reality!!

CSR

Looks to me like he's saying he doesn't need braces to keep his trousers up anymore:-) Where's the hard hat and hi viz Mike... you are on a building site remember... safety first !!

Parker

What will they use it for when the craze dies off?

Phil

What, the "craze" that's been around since the 70s?

PLP

Well said Phil.

Some folk really need to do their research more. If anything the "craze" is more serious now, with proper competitions and professionals.

It's like people who knock professional darts which I understand is now the second most watched sport on Sky below football. I'm sure Phil Taylor doesn't care too much though, he's too busy counting the £5m+ in earnings he's won.

samreed

it won't die off

Bungle

Pointless project. BE USED FOR 5 MINS THEN BECOME A TEENAGE GATHERING ZONE CAUSING GRIEF !!

Love how mikes there basically saying 'look at me, its all about me !!!' The only time he visits his main departmental zone and its only to see his 'baby'. Oh and because the camera was there of course.

Anyway, if he sells out bogey joe to tenders whats the bet they shut the park due to 'halth and safety'?. Bet not many leisure centres in the UK have skateparks. And whether you agree with Mr Hamons comments or not, they will look at the fact footballs will be whizzing in that direction and something will have to budge if incidents occur.

What a cheerful chap you are.

Sometimes cynicism, although painted with dark colours, is the best approach- it's realistic. Bungle is not trying to be like all those self-deluded false optimists who rely on sentimental feelings and wishful thinking in order to conceal the true nature of reality.

Pessimism, or at least realism, is sometimes the only way that one is able to acknowledge and embrace the brutality and wretchedness of the World- though the individual may not be particularly satisfied with life.

bcb

Yep right thanks for that Ed. But you really don`t need to point out any of those things to me as i am most likely far more aware than you are and from real world experiences and not reading from some book.

Careful Ed

Your 11.10am post sounds very much like the work of a budding Goth

I hope not as no good will come of it

You do not need to worry about that- I am still the same 'Ed' as I was when I began posting.

Ed

Anyway, I regard this enterprise as futile- prioritisation of funds is necessary for the States of Guernsey. How will this venture be of great future avail?

CameraShy

Well, considering it wasn't funded by the States...

But I'm sure that, as long as it is regularly given maintenance work, it's 'future avail' will be in keeping generations of islanders happy. With that being the outcome, I can't say I'd have had much of a problem with my taxes going on it, to be honest.

Terry Langlois

Ed, I believe that no States money was used for this project.

Alex Cross

Thus far, not a penny of tax payers money has been spent on this project. This park belongs to the GXSA in its entirety!

John

Great to see this nearing completion, and I wish everyone well. But why yet again is our hard earned being spent by employing a UK company ??

Terry Langlois

Unless you donated to the project, none of your money has been spent on it.

Dog Owner

Specialists in such thing. We do not have (m)any local specialised skate park construction companies. Yet.

Alex Cross

Hi John - As a member of the GXSA i can assure you we have used local companies wherever possible, the path around the park for example.

Sadly the park itself is a very specialist job and there are no contractors locally who are in a position to compete.

(Also, as others have already said, 100% privately funded!)

Ed

That earlier discussion was based on original thought, not from a book.

bcb

Sorry Ed but what discussion? I made a comment on a post which i thought was being rather pessimistic toward the skatepark and it seems you saw fit to try and wonder off on one of your crusades and entering into areas that really have nothing to do with the post in question.

You could always write your own book? :)

Bungle

project completed in April im led to believe. More bad weather coming up so will be delayed and over budget.

Alex Cross

The project was originally delayed due to bad weather, however as of Tuesday 15/01/13 the contractors and QS report the project to be on schedule.

Figures that a project not being run by the states can actually manage to be in scope, in budget and on time!!
