KEYS to the harbour's new 240-tonne crane will be handed over today, the harbour master has said.

But Captain Peter Gill said staff would spend a week training with the new equipment under the eyes of its manufacturer, Gottwald, before using it for regular port operations.

'Our staff have visited the factory and have practised on a smaller crane, but they've never used it with Guernsey Stevedores,' he said.

'The whole system we work has to be proven before we can bring it into operation.'
